OBX potter

A simply wonderful literary journey

I was the fortunate recipient of an advance copy of Brooklyn Bound and it fully entered my heart at word one. As a first generation American, I was raised by Eastern European immigrants with a very similar history and so the rhythms, cadences, smells and tastes of the book were so very easy and so palpably familiar that there were moments when it felt like my own story. Such is the power of memoir, I suppose, that one is able to enter such a deeply, personal space and have it whisper to your own soul. Grechenko's work skillfully and intimately focuses on the power of love and its multiple, variable and glowing sources, reminding us of the crucial role that love plays in building the strength we need to meaningfully chart a path forward in a world that often challenges one's ability to live with an open heart. This alone is a gift, and I am grateful for a memoir that glances backward and focuses on the importance of light in a complicated history where it might not always be immediately obvious. I loved feeling, too, the rumble of NYC life under my feet and, as promised in the author's introduction, I did indeed fall a little bit in love with Papa. More than a little.

Crisscross of the Banal with the Divine

You can only be uplifted by reading this heart-warming autobiography of a Russian-American girl whose parents skillfully outfoxed both Soviet Communists and German Nazis during World War II, to eventually reach New York and maintain a loving home in Brooklyn. With a remarkable memory for detail and a writing style often reminiscent of Margaret Mitchell, Grechenko skillfully takes seemingly disparate elements such as a fishing trip, the subway, the fifth-grade teacher, the class bully, Russian icons, the Italian neighbors next door, and the big impersonal hospital through the prism of a little girl's experience, showing all events to be sacramental, providential, and sadly sometimes, very ephemeral. While there are some sad moments in the book, they are counterbalanced by Grechenko's sparkling style as a masterful raconteuse and ingenious sense of humor, guaranteed to make you laugh and feel good. It's a great read for anyone who hasn't been around kids for a long time and who and especially for anyone with a young daughter, niece, or granddaughter they'd like to get better acquainted with, to appreciate how a young girl age 5-12 takes those first steps outside of the home, encountering the wider world.

An old friend sent me a copy of "Brooklyn Bound," fairly certain that I would love it. He was right. I started reading the words on the page, letting the beautiful details of a little girl's memories of her father's love, her mother's stern discipline and growing up in New York City's Russian immigrant community paint vivid images in my mind. After a bit, I no longer focused on the words printed on the page. Instead I found myself listening to a masterful storyteller recount the childhood experiences that shaped her and foreshadowed the trajectory of her life. I could hear the soft voice of her older self, describing pieces of a long ago puzzle that only come together into a pattern in retrospect. This memoir is a story of love, pain, courage, grit and hope that is well worth the read!
